POSITION: Music Instructor
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Assistant Building Principal or Designee
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time, 183 Days, Master Agreement, FLSA Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in music education, music performance, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Valid Ohio Certification/Licensure by the State of Ohio, Department of Education to instruct in his/her area of professional competency and/or assignment
  • Proficiency in one or more musical instruments and vocal techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, music history, and music pedagogy.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for music education and a commitment to fostering creativity, expression, and excellence in students.
  • Previous teaching or conducting experience, preferably in a K-12 school setting.
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License
  • Must pass criminal background check
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Music Instructor is responsible for providing comprehensive music education to students, fostering their musical skills, creativity, and appreciation for music. They design and implement engaging lessons, lead rehearsals and performances, and promote a lifelong love of music among students through a variety of musical experiences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop and implement a cohesive music curriculum that aligns with state standards, educational goals, and the developmental needs of students, incorporating a variety of musical genres, styles, and cultural traditions.
  • Plan and deliver dynamic and interactive music lessons using a variety of teaching methods, including singing, playing instruments, listening, movement, composition, and music technology, to engage students and promote musical literacy.
  • Teach students how to play musical instruments, such as piano, guitar, violin, flute, trumpet, or percussion, providing individual and group instruction tailored to the skill level and interests of students.
  • Develop students' vocal skills, including breath control, tone production, diction, intonation, and musical expression, through vocal warm-ups, exercises, and repertoire in choral settings.
  • Direct and conduct school musical ensembles, such as choirs, bands, orchestras, jazz bands, or chamber groups, leading rehearsals, guiding performances, and promoting teamwork and collaboration among students.
  • Prepare students for musical performances, concerts, recitals, and festivals through rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performance etiquette training, ensuring high standards of musicianship and presentation.
  • Teach music theory concepts, including notation, rhythm, harmony, form, and analysis, and provide opportunities for students to compose, arrange, and improvise music using traditional and digital tools.
  • Introduce students to the history of music, including major composers, styles, genres, and cultural influences, and facilitate discussions and activities that promote music appreciation and critical listening skills.
  • Integrate technology tools and resources into music instruction, including music notation software, digital audio workstations, multimedia presentations, and online resources, to enhance creativity, innovation, and digital literacy skills.
  • Provide students with opportunities to showcase their musical talents and accomplishments through performances, concerts, assemblies, competitions, and community events, fostering confidence and pride in their musical abilities.
  • Maintains valid teaching license with appropriate endorsement(s) for the position to which the employee is assigned.
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, his/her designee, or the employees’ principal/supervisor or his/her designee.

  • Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

  • Performs duty assignments e.g. parking lot, cafeteria and restroom.

  • Is punctual and thorough in implementation of all assigned duties.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Board policies and procedures, building policies and procedures, student code of conduct, community resource agencies, emergency preparedness drills, public relations, federal and state reporting, and records management.
ABILITY TO: Interpret policies, procedures and regulations, follow instructions, communicate effectively, prepare, maintain, and file accurate and concise reports, collect data, recognize individual differences, lift a moderate amount of weight, develop a rapport with students, staff, co-workers, administration and the public.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:
OCCASIONAL: Exposure to inclement weather driving conditions and severe weather, traffic, loud noise, unruly children/adults; attends functions or performs duties outside normal working hours; exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. Light lifting, up to 50 pounds.
PERIODIC: Exposure to inclement weather driving conditions and severe weather, heavy equipment, unruly children/adults; exposure to common childhood illnesses.
FREQUENT: Exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. Prolonged periods of standing and lifting (10-20 pounds). Bending, stooping and reaching.
